VMware and KVM are not compatible at the disk format, so basically
yes, you will need to convert them

Could you please be more specific about which details you are missing?

Also I found the VMWare SSH stuff and was hoping to use it

The SSH drivers are not compatible with the latest OpenNebula, they
will be revamped in the mid term.
