I didn't read the beginning of the thread, 
but just wanted to share my observation: 

I also had a VM that didn't live-migrate immediately. 
This was a 4 VCPU VM running 4 compute (and memory) intensive processes,
and I got impatient after even just 10 minutes.

Apparently, the migration had a tough time sync'ing 
the permanently changing memory to the new node.

Once I had ssh'ed in, I used kill -STOP to pause these processes.
Then I saw the blinking cursor freeze for a fraction of a second,
and could resume the processes via kill -CONT again.
