When you say you lose connection with the VM you mean you can not SSH
or VNC the VM?

It could happen that you are not using virtualization but emulation
(QEMU without kvm). Can you check that you have two kvm modules loaded
in the host? Should be called kvm and kvm_intel or kvm_amd.
