That makes sense - I was testing against a node with an enterprise license which unlocks all of the SDK options. If you want full read/write SDK access with a free license, you will want to use 3.5 u3 which was shipped (mistakenly?) with full r/w enabled. 3.5 u4 not only disabled the stuff accidentally unlocked in u3, but also some additional stuff which was unlocked in u2 and earlier IIRC.

I finally realized what is wrong here.
The ESXi 4.0 free licensed version does not support remote command controls.
The moment I removed the free license so that it becomes an
evaluation, it works with Open Nebula.
